Dilla University successfully hosted its 7th Annual Science Week on 2 Dec 2025, under the theme “Science for the Brightest Tomorrow,” bringing together scholars, researchers, and practitioners to reflect on the role of science in national development. The event focused on two strategic priorities: commercialization of applied research and the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academia and technology.
In his welcoming address, Dr. Misganu Legese, Director of Research, Publication, Ethics and Dissemination Office of Dilla University, underscored the importance of ethical, impactful research, university–industry collaboration, and innovation. Dr. Habtamu Temesgen, Vice president for Research and Technology Transfer of the university, and delegates of the university’s president, officially opening the event, highlighted the need to undertake applied research, and its commercialization for societal transformation, and the essentiality of integrating AI in education and research. Both speakers expressed deep appreciation to In. Dr. Mesele Haile and Dr. Kula Kekeba for their invaluable presence and keynote contributions, which enriched the deliberations and inspired forward-looking scientific engagement.
Applied Research Commercialization for Societal Transformation
In his keynote speech address, In. Dr. Melese Haile, the first keynote speaker, emphasized that applied research must generate practical, market-oriented solutions to real societal and economic challenges. He noted that successful commercialization depends on strong university–industry collaboration, supportive innovation policies, skilled human capital, and effective technology transfer systems. Addressing Ethiopia’s context, he identified challenges such as weak research–industry linkages, limited investment, and low technology absorption, and called for a clear national innovation roadmap, improved product standards, and a culture that values innovation and ethical research.
Ethical Challenges and Dilemmas of AI
Dr. Kula Kekeba, the second keynote speaker, focused on the expanding role of AI in research, education, and development, alongside the ethical issues it raises. While AI enhances efficiency and innovation, he advised against risks related to bias, data protection, transparency, and academic integrity. He emphasized Ethiopia’s need for stronger AI literacy, digital infrastructure, and ethical guidelines, recommending structured training, clear regulatory frameworks, and human oversight. He stressed that AI has to support researchers’ research undertakings, with full responsibility and ethical considerations.
Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer
Dr. Adisu Frinjo, Director of Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer of the university, showcased Dilla University’s progress in connecting academia with industry since 2013. He highlighted partnerships with industry, technology transfer initiatives, incubation centers, and strong performance in STEM fields, demonstrating the university’s commitment to translating research into real-world impact.
Overall Message
The Science Week underscored effective commercialization of applied research for societal transformation, and the integration and use of AI in research practices, which requires policy guidelines and strategies for its ethical utilization. Strengthened university–industry partnerships, innovation-oriented institutions, and responsible technology use were identified as key pathways toward sustainable development and global competitiveness.
