Dilla University successfully hosted its 15th Annual National Research Conference on April 2, 2026, bringing together scholars, community leaders, and government officials under the theme “Action for the Next Horizon: Innovative Research for Tomorrow’s Society.” The event highlighted the university’s growing role in advancing research that addresses pressing societal and regional challenges.
The conference officially commenced with a traditional blessing by the Abba Geda, the head of the local traditional leaders, symbolizing unity, cultural respect, and the strong connection between the university and the community. This was followed by a welcoming address from Dr. Habtamu Temesgen, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, who emphasized that the university’s Applied Science Transformation is guided by four pillars: reforming internal policies, transforming the research landscape, strengthening industry engagement, and advancing recognition and accreditation.
In his opening remarks, the University President, Dr. Elias Alemu, described Dilla University as a center of academic excellence in education, health, agriculture, and natural resources. He highlighted the university’s leadership in agroforestry and its contribution to sustainable development, noting the international recognition of the Gedeo Agroforestry system as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The conference featured keynote presentations addressing critical regional issues. Professor Yacob Arsano spoke on “Water Governance for Northeastern Africa: A Trajectory for Policy and Action,” stressing the need for effective institutional frameworks to manage shared water resources. He also noted progress made in the Nile Basin through sustained dialogue and negotiation. Dr. Adanech Yared from the Ethiopian Women in Water Association (EWIWA) delivered a keynote on “Empowering Women in Water Diplomacy: Baseline Study of Ethiopia,” highlighting the essential role of women in natural resource management despite persistent cultural and institutional barriers.
Parallel plenary sessions followed, featuring research presentations by Mr. Hussen Asefa and Mr. Tsalafo Chaka, alongside active discussions with participants and keynote speakers. In the afternoon session, selected research works were presented, showcasing innovative studies across disciplines and reinforcing the conference’s focus on practical solutions to contemporary challenges.
The conference served as an important platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, strengthening partnerships between academia, local communities, and policymakers. It also reaffirmed Dilla University’s commitment to producing impactful research that contributes to sustainable development at both national and regional levels.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Misganu Legesse, Director of the Office of Research, Publication, Ethics, and Dissemination, who commended the active participation of all stakeholders and reiterated the university’s dedication to advancing research for societal transformation.
