Coffee calendar

In Ethiopia, coffee growth starts from coffee seed. The seed germinates in about 40-50 days depending on the temperature of the area. The seedling with a pair of leaves is transplanted to polyethylene bags two months from the day of planting. The most favorable time to plant coffee seedling is the beginning of the rainy season around April/May. Vigorous seedlings with a height of 20-30 cm and with 6-8 pairs of leaves are selected and transplanted to field after 8-10 months in the nursery. Plantation sites are prepared ahead of time, usually 4-6 months before transplanting, hole digging commences about 3 months earlier than the time of planting because earlier digging gives time to accumulate water that will later help for easy root distribution, and for exposing and avoiding various disease organisms and insect pests.

Coffee comes into bearing 3 to 4 years after planting. However, full bearing is attained at 6 to 8 years. Under natural conditions, dormancy of flower budsis often broken by the first rains in the season following a dry period, flowers open on sunny days early in the morning, and flowers remain active only for 2-3 days. Fruits mature between 7 to 9 months after flowering. Harvesting takes place from September up to December, depending on the altitude.
