Welcome to Dilla University Botanical Garden
From Groundbreaking Research to Sustainable Stewardship
We bridge science, conservation, and community to protect Ethiopia’s biodiversity—inspired by nature, rooted in knowledge.
Nurturing Nature, Inspiring Conservation
Established in 2017, the Dilla University Botanical and Ecotourism Garden (DUBEG) began as a collaborative conservation effort between Dilla University and the Dilla Donbosco Catholic Church. What started as a protected enclave of native flora has since blossomed into a 137-hectare sanctuary dedicated to biodiversity preservation, cutting-edge research, and sustainable ecotourism.
Join us as we cultivate a greener future, one seed at a time
Over the years, DUBEG has grown into a regional hub for environmental education, supported by a team of passionate botanists, researchers, and conservationists. Together, we share a unified mission:
To safeguard Ethiopia’s threatened plant species through in-situ and ex-situ conservation.
To advance ecological research on climate resilience, pollination, and ethnobotany.
To inspire communities through hands-on education and sustainable ecotourism.
Today, DUBEG is home to 600+ plant species, including rare endemics like Millettia ferruginea and medicinal treasures such as Croton macrostachyus. Our thematic gardens—from the Pollinator Garden to the Wild Edible Plants Garden—serve as living laboratories for students, scientists, and visitors alike.

Our Approach to Conservation & Education
1. Research & Discovery
We begin by identifying threatened plant species and ecosystems through field surveys, ethnobotanical studies, and collaboration with local communities.
2. Planning & Conservation
Our team designs tailored strategies for in-situ (on-site) and ex-situ (seed banks, nurseries) preservation, prioritizing endemic species like Millettia ferruginea.
3. Implementation & Growth
From planting endangered flora to restoring habitats, we execute projects with scientific rigor—supported by students, researchers, and volunteers.
4. Education & Outreach
We share knowledge through workshops, guided tours, and partnerships with schools, ensuring conservation impacts future generations.

Rescue threatened flora from extinction, contribute towards conservation and research on biodiversity and sustainable education as well as eco-tourism development.
By 2030, establishing internationally renowned botanical and eco-tourism garden, witnessing the floral and heritage richness of Ethiopia, and attesting the fact that the country is center of origin for many economic and medicinal plants and patrimonies.

Rooted in Community
Ethiopia’s Living Classroom
At DUBEG, we believe biodiversity conservation thrives when communities lead the way. Our initiatives include:
School Partnerships: Hosting students annually for hands-on ecology workshops.
Citizen Science: Training local volunteers in plant monitoring and seed banking.
Cultural Preservation: Collaborating with Gedeo elders to document ethnobotanical knowledge.
“A garden grows best when nurtured by many hands.”
