Background of the IIS

The Institute of Indigenous Studies at Dilla University was established in 2007 with mandates to conduct researches on and with indigenous peoples and to conducts and coordinates scholastic, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research activities on indigenous studies with a central focus area of geographic south of Ethiopia. Moreover, the institute is mandated to collect, preserve and display tangible and intangible materials of the indigenous peoples mainly in the southern part of the country. Furthermore, it aims at providing trainings in interdisciplinary master’s and PhD programmes in indigenous studies in order to contribute to solving the shortage of trained human power in areas of indigenous resource management, conflict transformation, language development, heritage preservation and development, history, culture and governance. 

Vision of the IIS

The Institute of Indigenous Studies envisages being one of the best research and academic institutes in indigenous studies in East Africa by 2023.

Missions of the IIS

v  Realize the promotion, preservation and investigation of indigenous knowledge of the diverse ethnic groups of Ethiopia with particular emphasis to peoples at the periphery.

v  Explore the traditional values, local knowledge, institutions and customs of the societies for development, peace and democracy.

v  Engage in, through scholarly research, indigenous peoples’ issues such as climate change, food security, ethno-medicine, local innovations, intellectual property rights, and eco-tourism and heritage management.

v  Conduct research activities dealing with political, social and economic equality of nations and nationalities, and uncover indigenous peoples’ marginalizing trends in Ethiopia and beyond;

v  Collect and display cultural heritages of the societies, thus promoting balanced tourism economy from which the subject peoples become primary beneficiaries.

v  Promote, through different symposia, interaction with the wider academic community and policy makers so that the insights of the indigenous studies be disseminated in the best interest of the indigenous peoples.
